Top Tips for Moving

Regardless of when you plan to move, you need to read this.

Moves are big. There’s all the prep work, going through stuff, packing (or choosing people to help you), planning for the new space, etc.  Some people find that they delay a necessary move because they’re not up for the challenge of going through all their belongings and making decisions, or because physical limitations prevent them from doing the work. The more you can declutter before a move, the lighter the load will be, and you don’t have to do it all yourself.

Here are 4 top tips to make your move easier:

1) START EARLY. If you take anything from this message, take this: Allow yourself MORE time than you think you’ll need to go through your belongings. If you tackle the decluttering before your move, you’ll save money on the move and be less burdened by stuff in your new place. (This is especially important for seniors who are downsizing.)

2) CREATE CHECKLISTS. From packing lists to address changes, home details to critical tasks, don’t just try to remember it all. There are lots of apps and systems to help you; find something that works for you, even if it’s just paper and pen.

3) LABEL LABEL LABEL You’ll be glad you did when you’re at the new place, looking for that thing you need NOW. Label the tops and sides of boxes for each room, label what’s inside, label essential boxes that must be unpacked first. Label everything!

4) REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There are people to help you. You might be lucky enough to have friends and family members who can help you. Then again, the process of going through your belongings may be easier with a non-interested party who doesn’t have an emotional connection with your stuff. From organizers to senior move managers and downsizers, there are all kinds of people who are ready to lend a hand.

This just scratches the surface, but I’m planning to create a guide in the coming months. There’s also a fabulous color-coded moving system I want to share with you. Stay tuned for more great information!
