Supporting the Good Work of Nonprofits

Once a month I volunteer with the Damien Center, a fabulous nonprofit in Indy that serves individuals affected and infected by HIV/AIDS through a comprehensive, innovative approach to HIV care and prevention. My work focuses on their food pantry, unloading a large weekly donation from Kroger. The on-site food pantry provides a variety of nutritional foods for clients, acting as a supplement to their household nutrition needs.

The Damien Center is just one of the many nonprofits listed on the Spirit & Space website that seeks pre-owned items to support their missions. The Center welcomes a variety of donations (furniture, housewares, toiletries, cleaning supplies, craft items, silent auction items), but hygiene items are a critical need. Some of our clients now set aside unneeded toiletries and hotel samples for me to take to the Center when I volunteer.

Decluttering isn’t all about a dumpster and Goodwill. If you’re looking for a place to donate items that could help others, remember that the Indy nonprofits list is always available to those in Central Indiana. (There’s also a link to options in Terre Haute, as a senior living community there asked me to prepare a list for that area.) Not in Indy? Several organizations are national, and even just scanning the list may spark ideas for resources in your community.
