What can we do for downsizers?
Yesterday I was part of a “panel of experts” presenting information about stress-free living after 55. My portion of the program focused on downsizing. A participant suggested that the word “downsizing” had negative overtones of loss. While it’s true that one lets go of things when downsizing (which can be difficult for so many reasons), those who have journeyed through the process are often thrilled with the results and enjoying a simpler life.
A recent Spirit & Space project involved helping a client move to a senior community. We started with the decluttering process, and proceeded to help stage her house, plan and coordinate the move, unpack, and oversee custom closet installation. She loves her beautiful new place! She graciously wrote a note which lists what Spirit & Space did that was most helpful in her process, giving permission to share her comments:
· Shared potential strategies with me and listened to my input, questions and decisions
· Showed respect for my feelings and emotional response during the downsizing and moving process
· Cleared clutter quickly and showed me how to avoid clutter
· Introduced me to realtor and interior designer
· Used expertise sorting and storing household goods, clothes, and self-care items
· Placed things in my new space so that I can easily adapt and make it feel like my familiar home
· Kept timely records of fees and distribution of my things, both donations and sales
