“My ADHD makes it really hard to keep things straight.”
Sound familiar? It’s real; there is definitely a link between ADHD and being disorganized. And it’s a bit of a vicious circle: ADHD makes it hard to stay tidy, clutter contributes to stress and dysfunction, then mental health struggles make it that much harder to attend to the organizing. Overwhelming!
But there’s help; you don’t have to do it all alone. Tips, ideas and guidance for tackling the challenge of keeping your space manageable are available online and in multiple media. Even simple tips can make a big difference, for instance.
Set a timer. Create a sense of urgency by creating a deadline, and get the dopamine hit when you accomplish decluttering by the time the bell rings.
Declutter often. Whether it’s 15 minutes a day, 30 minutes a week or even twice-monthly sessions, establish a habit and stick to it. Tackle it bit by bit; the progress you see will help you build momentum (more dopamine!).
Get help. A partner, your kids, a friend, a professional – all can provide essential hands-on support.
Remember that a messy home isn’t a moral failing. It means you’re human. Some people have a higher tolerance for clutter; it doesn’t all have to look like the magazines! Find a style that works for you.
