Making Money on Your Stuff: A Tale of Two Silvers

Do you have silver sitting around unused? Perhaps now is the time to consider selling. As a collectibles advisor with The Keys Guild, I have access to experts across the country to get you the highest value. Take two recent clients:

One had two sets of sterling flatware. She knows few people use or buy silver these days. She could take it to a local jeweler or “we buy gold/silver” outfit; they would give her about 50% of the worth, then send it to a national refiner to be melted. By giving it to me, trusting my direct relationship with the refiner reaps about 95% of the value, she’s going to get a check for over $1600. (I confirmed with a trusted local dealer that the payout would have been HALF what I got for the set.)

The other client gave me a unique set of silver that was purchased on the island of Java during WWII by a Dutch soldier. The handles feature wayang kulit shadow puppet characters from the Hindu text Mahabharata. My client’s father bought it in 1947 for $300. How much is that worth today? As a Keys Guild member, I have multiple options for maximizing the value of my client’s collectibles. For this client, I chose Everything But The House, one of the largest online auction houses in the world, where this set will be curated for buyers across the globe. I can’t wait to see what happens!
