Decluttering Solution: The Good Work of Goodwill

Decluttering surfaces items that you no longer need but which still have value. What to do with all the stuff?! Household items, toys, books, electronics, and clothing in good condition can be donated to a variety of organizations. Consider Goodwill, which works to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work. In 2020 (the last year for which statistics are available on the national website), Goodwill served more than 1 million individuals worldwide and helped more than 126,000 people train for careers and get the supportive services they needed to be successful. The retail stores are perhaps the most visible part of the organization, but there’s much more to it.

For those who are decluttering, Goodwill is a great resource for recycling at its best. Their donation process is simple: just drive up and unload. They can’t take everything, though; here’s the list of donation standards in central and southern Indiana. There are more than 160 Goodwill organizations across the country, with hundreds of retail stores; check listings in your area for donation guidelines.
