Creating a Sacred Space

The world is a busy, chaotic place; our schedules are often full and there’s noise all around us. At home it’s important to have a place where you can rest, recharge, and relax completely. The health benefits of having regular time for quiet, prayer, and/or meditation are well documented; it may be easier to find that opportunity by creating a sacred space where you can renew your spirit and connect with your inner self and/or a Higher Power. There is no right or wrong way to create a sacred space; it’s a personal process based on your intuition and inspiration.

The tips below are designed to help you create a sacred place in your home; the ideas can be applied to the whole home for a more spiritual, peaceful environment.

  • Look for a space where you can be quiet, reflect, and get centered. It doesn’t have to be a separate room; it can be just a little corner. You might like to angle your space toward a window so you can see trees or watch and listen to birds.

  • Keep it clean and clutter-free. Clutter has a negative impact on your ability to feel calm and peaceful.

  • Arrange your space in a way that feels good. Add a chair or a comfy cushion to sit on. You may want a table nearby for a beverage. Consider adding a footrest, or a throw to wrap around yourself. If you enjoy listening to music or a podcast as part of your quiet time, there may be value to having headphones nearby if you live with other people.

  • Decorate with items that make you happy or inspire you. Tap into your sense of sight, sound, touch and smell, and bring nature in. You might include photos, an icon, or artwork that brings you joy; a singing bowl, bell or gong; prayer beads, a beautiful rock or shell; a scented candle, essential oils or fresh flowers. You may wish to create an altar and/or include symbols of your religion. The key is to include items that bring you joy and add to a peaceful, centered experience for you.

  • Consider options for spiritual reading and/or your own creativity. You might have scriptures, a prayer book, poetry, or a favorite author who speaks to you in meaningful ways. You might also find it helpful to write in a journal or draw in a sketchbook.

To reap the most benefit, create a ritual or routine for using your sacred space. Carve out time – even a few minutes a day or each week – to sit in your sacred space and center yourself quietly, breathing in the peace and joy that fills and strengthens you. Such time has a unique way of helping you feel calmer, clearer, happier, and more able to be your best self in the world.
