Buttons, Bobbins, and Beads, Oh My!
Yesterday Spirit & Space had the thrill of delivering a significant donation to a great nonprofit. Arts With A Purpose (AWP) is a consortium of multi-disciplinary artists who offer performing and visual arts programming while providing work for artists of all kinds. It is a key recipient for arts and crafts supplies that clients no longer need; they can put musical instruments to good use too!
One client was sorting through belongings left by her late sister. Another is downsizing before a cross-country move to senior living. Yet another is involved in a whole home decluttering project, including letting go of craft supplies his wife is no longer able to use due to illness. The donations filled my car and included everything from beads and ceramic tiles to stamping supplies, sewing notions, wrapping paper, and various oddments for use in art projects.
AWP creates partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and funders, coordinating and offering workshops, residencies, and performances in addition to producing advocacy and fundraising events. Their artists and contributors share a passion and belief that the arts and creative self-expression generate positive social and emotional change. Regarding this donation, Executive Director Cathy Morris said, “Arts With A Purpose makes matches between art supplies and experiences to audiences without access. Support – whether in kind via art supplies and instruments or financial donations – allows us to take the arts to all ages to create positive change while promoting individual wellness and social awareness.”
