A Day in the Life: Helping People, Facilitating Connections
Ever wonder what a professional organizer does? It’s not all closets and garages (although that’s part of it). I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the variety of projects Spirit & Space has been asked to do. One day this week is a great example of the best of Spirit & Space:
8:15: Drop off at Good News Ministries, downtown Indianapolis – I dropped off 7 bags of clothing for a senior downsizing client who cleaned out her late husband’s closet; he volunteered at GNM routinely, and it brought her joy to support their work with this donation.
9:00-12:00: Downsizing in Greenwood – This client won three hours of service from Spirit & Space, a prize from Greenwood Village South after a presentation I gave on senior downsizing. This client is expecting to move to GVS soon; he was delighted by the work we did together, cleaning out closets and preparing a donation for the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.
12:30: Call with a Networking Connection – In this business, a broad network of collaborative partners is essential. The person I spoke with today owns an exemplary handyman service business, which is something clients need with some regularity. She also runs a side business in which she purchases dishes, glassware, and flatware for sale across the globe. That’s a critical connection for my downsizing clients; a neighbor already made an appointment for this person to look at items she wants to sell.
2:00-4:00: Kitchen Organizing in Zionsville – This busy working mom hired me for decluttering and space planning. Today’s project focused on kitchen cabinets; in the process, she purged three boxes of surplus kitchen supplies.
4:45: Kitchen Supplies Drop Off – Fortunately I had a place to take those boxes! A neighbor volunteers with Exodus Refugee Immigration; they will be thrilled to have those kitchen items to give to immigrants settling in Indianapolis.
6:00: Yoga! – This job is more physical than any I’ve ever had; our church offers a weekly yoga class with a fabulous instructor, and I’m committed to this self-care practice.
Not all days are as full as this one. However, when there’s so much good happening, days like this are fulfilling and fun. Spirit & Space…creating joy one organized space at a time.
